“あまり” in Negative Sentences

• Meaning: Not very much, not very, not often — it expresses a small amount or low degree.

• Structure: あまり + verb/adjective (in negative form)

Examples:

• この店のラーメンはあまりおいしくない。
–この みせ の ラーメンは あまり おいしくない。
-This restaurant’s ramen is not very tasty.

• 昨日はあまり勉強しなかった。
–きのう は あまり べんきょうしなかった。
-I didn’t study much yesterday.

1. 最近はあまり運動していません。
–さいきん は あまり うんどうしていません。 
-I haven’t been exercising much lately.

2. この映画はあまり面白くなかったです。
–この えいが は あまり おもしろくなかった です。

 “あまり” in Affirmative Sentences (formal or literary use)

• Meaning: Because of too much… — it expresses that something happened because the degree was too strong, often emotions.

• Structure: • Noun + のあまり Verb/Adjective (plain form) + あまり

Examples:

• 彼はうれしさのあまり泣いてしまった。
–かれはうれしさのあまりないてしまった。
-He cried because he was too happy.

• 驚きのあまり、声が出なかった。
–おどろき の あまり、 こえ が でなかった。
-I was so surprised that I couldn’t speak.

   -When she heard the news of her father passing away, she was so sad that she stayed in bed all day.

3。怒りのあまり椅子を壊した。
–いかり の あまり いす を こわした。 
-I was so angry that I broke the chair.

4。試験に合格したうれしさのあまり、電話で叫んだ。
–しけん に ごうかくした うれしさ の あまり、 でんわ で さけんだ。
-I was so happy when I passed the test that I screamed on the phone.
